Project Jet Set

The latest Project Run & Play designer collaboration has released and now I’m going to share the sewing I did for the collection!  The theme for this edition is Jet Set, so we all focused our energies on creating a wardrobe perfect for travel – whether local or far-flung.

Today in our imaginations we’re going to visit Italy, and the cities of Vicenza and Verona.  We are traveling to Italy this summer to meet up with my sister in law and her family who have been living in Bologna for the past year on a sabbatical.

We took photos in a local garden and the Italianate architecture and wisteria vines make it a great stand-in for Vicenza which is known for it’s flowering wisteria vines and architecture by Andrea Palladio.  The flower is called “glicine” in Italy, and while we missed the blooms on our visit we still enjoyed the lovely foliage and mature plants.

I designed three patterns for Project Jet Set and they’re all modeled by Hadley and Arden in these photos.  The Camper Hat, Overlook Woven Raglan, and Cruise Culottes.  The Camper Hat covers all head sizes from preemie to large adults, and the Overlook and Cruise patterns are for sizes newborn to 14 years.

The Overlook Woven Raglan is pretty much what it sounds like: a raglan for woven fabrics.  The shoulders have darts for shape across the shoulder point.  The neckband is sewn just like a knit neckband, just cut on the bias so it can curve around the neckline.  There is an optional shoulder placket so it will pass over the head for the smaller sizes (or for larger noggins or just because it’s cute!).  Two different silhouettes are this longer shaped style and a shorter, straighter cut.  The sleeves can be cuffed or hemmed.  I cut this great windowpane linen on the bias for the cuffs to highlight the pattern.  All the interior seams are French seams.

The windowpane linen is from my stash but is from Raspberry Creek Fabrics, who generously provided a gift certificate for me to use for sewing this collection.  This colorway isn’t currently available, but this one*  (*denotes affiliate link) is the reversed colors.  This fabric was perfect for this pattern – fluid enough for the curved neckline, but crisp enough for lovely sewing.

Hadley’s Overlook has the optional neckline placket.  I used Kamsnaps for the closure, but buttons can also be used.  The fabric is an oldy-but-goody from my stash, a Robert Kaufman plaid seersucker.  I’ve used it previously here, and now after this top and the hat I’m down to teensy scraps.

Arden’s Cruise Culottes are the longer straight option with the curved flap pockets.   The fabric is teal lightweight double gauze* from RCF.  I wasn’t sure how sewing double gauze would be for this, but it was fabulous!  It’s so soft and swishy and Arden really loves how comfortable they are.  She requested the longer straight culottes and they are totally her style.  She loves how they move in the breeze and that they resemble a skirt but have the coverage of pants.

Hadley is modeling the shorts length straight Cruise Culottes also with the curved flap pockets.  The fabric is also from my stash.

I made Camper Hats for each of them.  The hats are reversible so you get two styles out of one hat.  Hadley’s hat uses the bias tape option to finish the edge, so there’s a contrasting bias on the plaid side that you can see inside.  This hat uses both fabrics from her outfit so she can use either side.  Arden’s hat is the bagged finish and I also quilted the layers of the brim.

I also made each of them an adorable Passport to Paradise Mini Backpack designed by That’s Sew Kari.  The little pouch is sized for a passport which will come in handy when they use their newly-minted passports to go to the UK and Europe next month.  The main fabric for this one is the Paper Airplanes* print on canvas.  RCF has many of it’s in-house designs available to print on a huge variety of substrates, and this is one of them.

For Arden’s backpack, I embroidered a paper airplane to mimic the ones on the print onto the passport pouch.  I love the way these little pouches are secured into the pocket with a clip so they can’t be lost.  There’s also an interior slip pocket perfect for keeping a phone or notebook in an easy to grab spot.

Hadley’s backpack is also a custom print on canvas – this Playful Summer Dinosaur* print was right up her alley!  I had fun with the tassel clip on hers, using felt balls instead of a regular tassel.  I bought all the bag hardware and zippers from A Notion 2 Sew.  I definitely enjoyed having the double slide zippers so I didn’t have to add the second zipper pull myself.

For the second set of outfits we walked to our local park to replicate Verona, Italy.  We live in Verona, NJ so it was a logical choice!!

Arden is modeling the Rimini Romper by Call Ajaire, and Hadley is wearing the Sevilla Sleeveless Top by Suco by Susana paired with the Too Wild Dress by Waves & Wild.  The Too Wild is for sizes preemie to 12 years and the Sevilla Sleeveless Top is for 12 months to 14 years.

The Rimini Romper has loads of options and a great size range of newborn to 16 years as is standard for Ajaire’s patterns.  This is the shorts romper, but you can also make a pants romper, or a dress in two different lengths.  There’s an optional flounce that can go into the princess seams.  I made this using a dusty pink waffle knit* from Raspberry Creek Fabrics.  Both Arden and hadley now wear bras so a romper that covers the straps is great for older girls.  The shaping of this is wonderful and easy to pull on and off through the lowered back neckline.

Hadley’s Seville Top has the optional flounce per her request.  I had initially planned to pair this top with the red Cruise Culottes which would have let the fun encyclopedia fabric show more.  This is a wonderful sleeveless top and will definitely be paired with other bottoms for the summer.

The Too Wild Dress is the cross back strap option and is really fun in this textured linen blend from RCF.  It’s a little heavier than plain woven linen, but it ended up being perfect for this style.  Hadley could not stop twirling once I reassured her that her underwear didn’t show.  For younger girls this looks really nice and cool without a shirt underneath.  It would also be great to toss on over a swimsuit.

This view shows a little bit of the print.  The solid red* and Tossed Objects Encyclopedia Bri-Tanica* print are both from RCF and are cotton Lycra.

I am near the end of the blog tour, and then the Project Jet Set look book will be published shortly!  Be sure to check out all the other tour participants as they “travel” the world for their posts.
