I’m inching closer to sewing the full collection for Project Watercolor Beach! This week I made the Ripley Swimsuit by Bubby and Me Creations.
First, I’ll explain the location and some of the adjustments I made to the pattern due to that location: Just after the school year finished in New Jersey, the girls and I packed up my Rogue and made the 20-ish hour drive to my parents’ house on the Gulf in Florida. We had planned to fly for Spring Break, but then Covid-19 and the stay at home order happened.
I brought two of my machines and a selection of fabrics and notions since we were driving. I had another Viridian in mind for these fabrics, and the 3/8″ swim elastic that pattern calls for. Then the Ripley Swimsuit became available and I switched plans. The Ripley Swimsuit calls for 1/4″ elastic along the bodice edge and straps, and I didn’t have any (nor any way to get some) so I modified the width of the binding to use the 3/8″ elastic.
Aside from the elastic change, the suit went together well. I particularly like the way the bottom edge of the upper bodice is enclosed in the main and lining of the bottoms.
We had the perfect setting to take photos without leaving the property, as we’re in Florida and my parents live on a canal in the 10,000 islands. My dad’s little skiff is just to the right of Hadley in these photos.
Hadley insisted on a hair flip shot, and this one actually turned out pretty well.
The Ripley Swimsuit is for sizes 1 through 10. I really like the coverage on the bottoms and the ruffled straps. This is my first go with binding on swim, and I think I need a bit more practice to make them well.
The swim fabrics are from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. This is the third swimsuit I’ve made with their swim fabrics and I truly think it’s fabulous! The solid purple is nice and opaque and a good weight. I used that to line the suit and the result is a substantial swimsuit that won’t become translucent when wet.
One more note about my version of the Ripley Swimsuit: the overlap of the “v” should be greater. I misread the pattern and only overlapped by 1″, when it should have been 1″ on each side for a total of 2″. Even with the wider opening it covers just fine.

This came out lovely! And Hadley was right about the hair flip shot too; got her looking like a professional model. Loving this stripe from Raspberry Creek.
