I promised more details about *One Thimble Issue 19 (affiliate link), so without further ado here’s the first pattern beyond the Pixel Pullover I made from the latest edition, the Playtime Dress from Sew by Pattern Pieces.
This dress is right up my kiddo’s alley: plenty of twirl, fun feature pockets, and comfortable. Â It ticks my boxes with several sleeve options that take it from summer to winter dressing, and an uncomplicated sew with just one more intricate area: the pockets. Â Sizing is from 1-14, so it will fit my girls for many more years.
Those may look like a simple patch pocket topstitched on, but look closer–they’re really set in circular pockets! Â How fun is that? Â Don’t worry, Lauren has made what could be a difficult endeavor into a straightforward and satisfactory process with pattern markings to make the alignment smooth sailing.
There’s several different pocket construction techniques offered: a full pocket facing, a half pocket facing, or binding. Â I did the full pocket facing because I was using a lightweight rayon Lycra backed with the same t-shirt jersey as the main dress. Â I pulled out the three-thread coverstitch for the pocket openings and love the great contrast I’ve gotten!
Lauren includes all appropriate fitting adjustments that might be needed, but Hadley fit soundly into size 8 with no adjustments. Â There are two lengths offered; this is the shorter length. Â If I were making this pattern for Arden who is much leggier than Hadley I would have used the longer length.
A bit about the main fabric I used for this dress: I recently joined the Sly Fox Fabrics Promotional Team. Â That means from time to time I’ll get some free fabrics in exchange for reviewing and posting about them. Â This camouflage t-shirt knit fabric in Army tan is a touch outside of my typical style, but I really like it. Â It definitely fits Hadley’s aesthetic: wild and unique! Â It’s what you’d expect of a t-shirt knit, soft and fairly lightweight and not a ton of drape. Â In other words, perfect for a t-shirt, or a t-shirt dress. Â I also used it to make myself a swing tank, and it’s nice to see it on a different model.
This dress will definitely get loads of wear over the summer, and layered over a long sleeve t-shirt and leggings will take it into the cooler months. Â Hadley loves wearing dresses, so I try to focus more of my sewing time there for her.
I’m hoping to find time to sew a few more patterns from One Thimble Issue 19, like the Pinky Promise Bag, or the Monster Mash Pinafore.  Head over to *One Thimble (affiliate link) and see what piques your interest!
