We interrupt Moto Jacket pattern preparation to bring you…  the Ishi Dress by Straight Grain!  I joined the chorus with a resounding “yes please!” when An asked if she should turn her prototype into a pattern.
The pattern is for girls’ sizes 1Y to 10Y and has options for button or invisible zipper closure, straight or slanted pockets, and short or long sleeves. Â And the coolest integrated pockets and construction without side seams you ever will see!
I embellished the top of the straight pocket with mini pom pom trim sandwiched between the pocket and the lining. Â Such a fun little detail – I want to put pom pom trim on everything!! Â We’re warming up for summer here, so I decided to make the dress sleeveless by binding the armscyes with some narrow double fold bias tape. Â This also brought the yellow of the trim up to the top of the dress to balance it – perfect!
I had this great striped linen from a sewing blogger’s trip to NYC last summer. Â That was right when we were first looking into a job in New Jersey and a potential move to the area. Â Instead of using the style lines of the dress to color block I played with the direction of the stripes, putting the front and back vertically, the side panels diagonally, and the pockets and little contrast bands at the bottom horizontally.
About those bands… Â I could call it intentional because the result is really cool, but that’s really not the case. Â I was still deciding which girl to make this for when I printed the pattern, and had taken advantage of the layers for printing by size – the 5Y for Hadley and the 6Y for Arden. Â I had intended this Ishi Dress for Hadley and was cutting the 5Y size when I looked down and had accidentally switched from the 5Y to the 6Y at the princess seam line. Â So I continued to the 6Y through the sleeve and did the same on the back panel. Â Then when I sewed the side panel, the front and back were shorter (and I already had the pockets in place). Â So no big deal, I just added on the strips and turned it into a lengthened 5Y for Arden.
An has put together contest with an amazing prize package worth $700!!  All you have to do to enter is link up your Ishi Dress!  Read about the amazing sponsors and details here.

This is fantastic!! Love your use of these stripes….and the band is a perfect addition for this look!!
I’m a sucker for stripes and this pattern is just perfect in it! Love all the different directions of the stripes and the yellow accent… Beautiful!
Very pretty. I always admire a sewer who can nail it with stripey fabric!
The dress is so cute! I love the fabric you used and the trim on the pockets. The stripes look great too.
Thank you so much for creating this stunning Ishi, Jennifer! I love everything about it, and I think that the band at the bottom only makes the dress better (even though it was meant to compensate for a mistake). Just beautiful!
Thanks for inviting me to participate on the tour An! It’s a lovely pattern and this certainly won’t be my last Ishi.
I love it how you played with the directions of the stripes on your fabric. And those bands – accidental detail or not, they add interest 🙂 You make me want to sew something with pom pom trim now 🙂
Thanks Jenya! I love happy accidents.
love your fabric and hint of yellow! made me buy the pattern 😉
