I am a huge fan of Frances Suzanne and their Flip This Pattern series! Â They’ve always got some fun twist up their sleeves and February’s theme is no exception. Â February “Free for All” is all about showcasing – you guessed it – free patterns!
I took the opportunity to use two free patterns and create a FREE FLIP! Â I mashed up my Pip Skirt with the Oliver + S Popover Sundress, now re-named the “Pip”over Sundress. Â Gotta love a good play on words, amiright? Â The Pip Skirt is a pdf tutorial with dimensions and a full tutorial for girls’ sizes 12 months to 12 years, and the Popover Sundress is a pdf pattern with full size pattern pieces for girls’ sizes 2 through 8, with an 18” doll pattern also included.
I combined the two patterns by inserting a lengthened pocket panel from the Pip Skirt into the sides of the Popover Sundress.
This was a really easy mashup – I simply drew a line parallel to the side seam 2 1/4″ from the edge. Â I folded that portion of the pattern piece under and cut two on the fold just like normal. Â Then I referenced the chart for the Pip Skirt to see how much longer the pocket panel was compared to the skirt dimensions. Â For size 6, this was 10 inches. Â So I cut two pieces for the pocket panels at 5″ x 27″.
Then just follow the instructions to make the pocket panels from the Pip Skirt tutorial, only you’ll have to either check placement or back-calculate the top edge of the fold from the bottom of the dress as the tutorial gives measurements from the top edge of the skirt.
I used knit fabrics for my “free flip” even though both patterns are written for woven fabrics. Â This is “Sterntaler” by Lillestoff, and this is my first time sewing with European knits. Â I have to tell you – they’re well worth the hype they receive. Â This fabric is substantial and soft and the colors are rich.
I used knit interfacing on the yoke pieces, and made the ties using the same dimensions as given to make bias ties (just not cut on bias). Â I used my twin needle to sew the bias and the hem, and a stretch stitch on the yoke piece.
Arden loves her new dress and I love that I have a new pattern to whip up easy peasy “Pip”over Sundresses with pockets for my treasure hunting girls.
I’m bringing in the rear of the February Free for all posts, but be sure to check out everyone else’s posts if you haven’t been following along.  Today Ana Sofia from S is for Sewing and Sara from Made by Sara.  Also don’t forget to enter any projects you’ve made in 2015 using free patterns in the linkup for a chance to win patterns from the September Showcase- my LOL Swing Top is one of them!
Adorable! I love the contrast panels on the sides and those deep pockets. Too cute!
This is a great result of the combination of both patterns. Very nice idea and fabric. Thanks for sharing the tutorial.
