Nothing like a pattern tour to start me back into the swing of things, right? Â I’m happy to be sewing up Suz’s most recent pattern, the Sunday Picnic Dress and sharing with you today.
It was Hadley’s turn to get a new dress, and you’ll notice my old standby backdrop – our front door. Â I could have found something different, but since we’re moving in under two weeks this may be the last opportunity I have with our previously chippy green door. Â I’m going to miss this when we move, but I’ll have a new front door to shoot in front of, and I’m sure you’ll soon grow tired of our new black front door backdrop!
The Sunday Picnic Dress is for girls’ 12 months through 10 years and has an optional collar and three sleeve options: sleeveless, half sleeves or full sleeves. Â I chose the full sleeve, and added a cuff to my dress as the only modification.
The main fabric is Cloud 9 organic cotton from Jo-Ann’s. Â I haven’t been able to find it at the closest store to me, so I was pretty excited to find it in a nearby city. Â I chose a buttery yellow cotton broadcloth for the collar and cuffs.
While I was lucky to find Cloud 9 there, I wasn’t as fortunate in the piping (or even cording to make my own!) department. Â So my Sunday Picnic Dress is un-piped. Â That’s really fine with me anyways, since I took great effort to try to match the pattern across the skirt piece to the pocket bags. Â I’m planning a post for tomorrow to show how I pattern match, so check back for that!
It is also buttonless because no matter which color I auditioned against those adorable birds, every one was lost among them. Â It’s too bad, because I really like that faux-wrap detail continuing from the line of the collar and it’s not very evident in my dress with neither piping nor buttons. Â The skirt is the perfect length and in a little pattern drafting geekery, I really appreciate how Suz straightened out the line on the skirt pieces through the hem to make pressing easier and more even.
The back of the dress closes with an invisible zip. Â Suz gives great instructions for installing the zip on a fully lined bodice so that the zipper is completely enclosed.
Hadley was more than happy to model her new birdie dress, and I’m happy to have one more memory of the home we lived in at the beginning of our family.

And then on Friday, the tour wraps up with three more talented sewists. Â Happy sewing!
I love this fabric! It’s darling. And I love how you did the cuffs! I read your post- the Handcrafted dress you made for your daughter is gorgeous- I got to play with some of that fabric too and it is just divine! 🙂
This is such a great version of the dress! And Hadley is looking so grown up!
Yes she does, doesn’t she? I find myself hugging and cuddling her more now that she seems to be growing up so quickly! She’s only just turned three, but she seems so mature at times.
Hadley looks so cute in her new dress 🙂 Love your version of the dress Jenn. Piping or no piping, it looks wonderful.
