Grandpa Cardigan

When I decided to sew along for Project Run & Play, I had a few points I set for myself to try to follow:  I wanted to complete a project for each week, I wanted to try to use materials I had on hand as much as possible, and I wanted to only make things I thought the girls would truly wear.  So when I was brainstorming for boy’s week, I knew I wanted to make something for my younger daughter Hadley.  I kept coming back to a simple cardigan with cool elbow patches – what my husband Dave refers to as a Grandpa sweater.  So I give you the Grandpa Cardigan:

The girls and I are on vacation in Florida, so we took these pictures on the seawall at my parent’s house.  Hadley definitely can put out the crotchety old man attitude!

I used a cotton/acrylic blend pullover sweater I wasn’t wearing anymore and some yellow marine grade vinyl I had leftover from the superhero costume I made my nephew Jack.  Using a little cardigan that fit her somewhat snugly I sized the new sweater up a bit so it will fit her a little longer.
I was able to use the ribbing from the neckline of the refashion victim sweater to trim the cut edges and kept the bottom and sleeve ribbing intact.  I added four buttonholes in a contrasting teal-y blue to match the little blue flecks in the sweater and yellow buttons to match the elbow patches.  The elbow patches I sewed on before constructing the sweater with the same blue thread and added decorative parallel lines across the circle.  I have to imagine that marine vinyl should wash just fine, but we’ll see when the time comes I guess!

She looks so stinkin’ serious – like she’s about to belt out “you young whipper snappers better get off my lawn before I call the cops!” just like a cranky old man!  I can’t believe she’s so big and opinionated at only 15 months.  I think I’ve got my work cut out for me…

It’s such an adorable look, love the colors! How was it sewing with that knit? I yet have to overcome the fear of sewing with knitted fabric (sweater knit). Won’t the seams unravel? Any tips would be welcome! thanks 🙂

The knit was large enough that I did need to finish the edges. I have a serger, but zig-zag stitch would work fine. If it were a tighter knit you can leave the edges and they’ll just roll under. Even if I didn’t finish the edges I don’t think the seams would unravel. I use the stretch stitch when I sew with knits, but you can also use a straight stitch if you don’t think the seams will get pulled hard, or a narrow zig-zag also works to allow some stretch. Don’t fear knits – they’re a great source of comfy clothes that kids love to wear.

Great job on the remake! I love the buttons with the patches. Your little girl is doing a perfect imitation of a grumpy old man. Love it!

I know it was difficult thinking up something for boys week… when there are only girls in the family! I liked your idea of the Grandpa sweater! I’m trying to finish my UNISEX overalls tonight, but I’ve got those darn buttonholes to finish.

Ha! For me, buttonholes either fly with no issues, or I’m left picking out misplaced stitches (like on my Skipper Dress – drat!).

This is really adorable—I LOVE refashions that don’t look like refashions—and this one totally doesn’t. It is awesome.

[…] Week 3 – Boy’s Challenge:  This little grandpa cardigan got tons of wear while we were still in Florida during chilly mornings and evenings.  It’s getting worn here in Michigan as well, but it seems like we use it more like a light coat than a sweater.  I still don’t know how it washes as it’s survived clean so far… […]
