Mini Boden Inspired Heart Patch Trousers

I made these cute Mini Boden inspired Heart Patch Trousers as part of Kids Clothes Week Challenge, and I’ve been wanting to share some of the details of how I created these with you.

Here are the inspiration pants.  I was hoping to find corduroy in a similar turquoise color, but  my local JoAnn’s only had a super-fine whale and I didn’t think that would work for an active three year old, so I went with the heavier weight grey.

I drafted my own pattern using a pair of khakis that fit Arden well.  I’ve since revised this pattern with notes that I need to add to the rise in the rear, and the cutouts for the front pockets are much to wide and low.  I used freezer paper for this pattern and it worked out really well because I could just iron on the pattern for cutting.  I’ll be using freezer paper more often in the future!

I wanted to add some fun contrasting fabric, so for the rear pockets I cut out my heart pattern from the corduroy and also the contrast fabric.  Stitch with right sides together (RST), leaving an opening to turn.  Trim seam allowances and clip the bottom and snip the top to reduce bulk.  Turn, press and topstitch.

For the knee patches, I still used the contrast fabric even though it would be hidden.  I did this to make it easier.  I did the same as for the back pockets, but this time I didn’t leave an opening to turn.  Instead I cut a slit in the middle of the contrast fabric for turning.  Trim seam allowances and clip the bottom and snip the top to reduce bulk.  Turn, press and topstitch.

I added the patches to the knee area of the pant fronts before sewing them to the back pieces by following the topstitching.  If I were to make these again, I’d do another line of stitching inside the topstitching to more closely match the Mini Boden version, and because I like it.

The pockets were added to the pants backs before sewing them to the front pieces by following the topstitching, but leaving the top of the hearts open.  I went back later and sewed a little higher than shown here to keep them from flipping down.

I also added the contrast fabric to the inside of the front pockets.  Just a little mor whimsy for my cute little big girl.

I adore mini Boden and even though there’s not a single girl in the house but me, I did eye these and want to buy them. I was thinking I could do them with stars for the boys. Your knock-offs are precious and not just because they are cord (because everyone know everything made with baby wale cord is precious).
