Teddy Bear Sleeping Bag

This is Charlie.  Actually, this is Tiny Charlie.  We have Big Charlie, Little Charlie, and as previously introduced – Tiny Charlie.  My nephew Nathan (or perhaps his parents?) had a thing for Charlie Bear when he was a baby and Arden has been gifted with Charlie and his friends over the years.  They are all well-loved, but Tiny Charlie is far and away the favorite.

We decided that Charlie needed a sleeping bag.  Arden was my helper and participated in most of the process.  Well, there was a snack and a trip outside to play with Daddy in the middle…

First we measured Charlie, leaving some extra room for the seam binding, and some slack on the top so he’d fit inside.

Arden chose some fabrics from my stash for the inside, outside, and seam binding.  I added some quilt batting – a great way to use up those pieces that are too big to toss but way too small for a quilt.  I hang onto those for table runners and other little “quilty” projects.  Arden picked out one of the decorative stitches on my machine – a little squiggle, and I quilted both pieces.

I made half of a box seam on the bottom corners of the top piece to allow Charlie some room to wiggle his toes.  I also rounded all the corners of the bottom piece.

I sewed on the seam binding (I didn’t bother with the bias part of bias tape, so I’m calling it seam binding instead) with a zig-zag stitch to be a little more forgiving.  If this were a real quilt, I’d machine stitch to the front and hand sew the backside, but I think that’s overkill for this project.

Arden loves it!  I think Charlie does, too!

Do you make projects with your kids?  How does it work out?

That is, by far, the most fun activity that my son and his teddy bear can do during the holidays! Certainly, cute and fun. Awww. <3 I can already see my kids doing this in my mind. Makes me really excited.
